Sorting Your Fiber

Sorting Your Fiber - What to keep & what to save

  • The best part of your alpaca’s fleece is the blanket area between the base of the neck and the hips and tail.
  • Be careful to skirt away the trash that is always at the base of the neck and don’t get the coarse hair at the tail into this fiber.
  • Also avoid the dirty fiber on the belly and don’t get into the coarse fiber on the legs.

Make Sorting Easy – Save your back
A great sorting table can be made with PVC pipe fittings, pipe and the heavy plastic mesh now sold for poultry cages and little league backstops. Ours is about 6 feet long and 3 feet wide and I also use it to dry newly washed fiber on. The trash falls thru but the fiber stays on the mesh . When I am done using it, I pull the legs off and hang the top on the garage wall.
